Fantasy Basketball: Point Guard Busts

The players listed below have health risks team role concerns:

Tony Parker (Spurs): Parker has been a fantasy sleeper and underrated point guard for years because of his consistency. However, last season marked the first time since 04-05, he averaged under 18.6 points per game. He also averaged 5.7 assists, .5 steals and .2 threes per game. Parker also shot 75.6% from the foul line and averaged 2.7 turnovers per game which also drives down his stock.

The low underline numbers and 26 regular season games he missed due to injury (hand, hip, ankle) makes him a risky pick in the early-middle rounds. He started just two out of 10 games in the playoffs. Parker played in 30 minutes per game in the regular season, which was his lowest total since his rookie season. George Hill broke out last season and again should eat into Parker’s minutes this season. Even though Parker is entering a contract season, I would draft a guard with more upside such as Darren Collison, Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Mo Williams and Raymond Felton.

Devin Harris (Nets): Harris has the potential to be an elite fantasy point guard but his fantasy stock is full of red flags. His inability to stay healthy has made him a very frustrating player to own. He has missed 31 games over the past two seasons and shot a career low 40.3% from the field last season. He also shot 28 percent from downtown and his free throw attempts decreased 2.8 from the season before.

Jose Calderon (Raptors): Calderon was a fantasy surprise in 2007-2008 when he averaged 11.2 point, 8.3 rebounds and shot 52% from the field. However, in each of the past two seasons he has missed 14 games due to ankle and hamstring injuries. Yesterday in a game against the United States he suffered an injured hamstring and will miss the rest of the World championships. Jarrett Jack started 43 games last season and has not missed a regular season game in three straight seasons. Calderon has played in 77 or more games in two of his five seasons.

Calderon: 68 games, 10.3 points, 5.9 assists, 2.1 rebounds, 1 three, .7 steals, 48% from the field.

Jack: 82 games, 11.4 points, 5 assists, 2.7 rebounds, 1 three, .7 steals, 48% from the field,

Mike Bibby (Hawks): Bibby is no longer a household name in fantasy because of his age (33 years old in May) and decreased role with the team. However, owners still draft him based on name recognition. Last season he averaged career lows in points (9.1), assists (3.9), foul shots per game (1) and minutes per game (27).  The only area he contributed in last year were three pointers (1.6 per game). However his three point attempts have declined the past three seasons and shot 41.6% from the field (second lowest of his career). Also look for backup PG  Jeff Teague to steal more minutes.
